The palate is full-bodied and rich with flavors of ripe berries and dark fruit, supported by silky tannins and notes of vanilla marshmallow and layers of spice on a complex, long finish.

While below average winter rainfall led to some light early spring irrigation, the 2021 growing season continued with favorable warm spring weather that aided vines to reach max canopy height. Summer temperatures heated up and slowed down vine growth as vines transitioned into fruit development. Weather leading into harvest was relatively cool and uneventful. Moderate day temperatures and cool nights ensured extended hang times, which resulted in wines with great structure, round mouthfeel, and balanced flavors

Allegrini Palazzo della Torre Veronese IGT V21 750ML
NEW

sale price $21.99
Allegrini’s Palazzo della Torre wine comes from the eponymous cru in the Valpolicella Classico subzone of Fumane, adjacent to the Renaissance-era Villa della Torre, where Allegrini hosts hospitality and events. About 30% of this wine undergoes the appassimento process; in this way it is similar to a Ripasso wine, but distinct in that no re-fermentation takes place. Rather than add “fresh” wine to leftover grape must - as is traditional - Allegrini blends a finished appassimento wine (in effect, an Amarone) with a finished "fresh" wine. A small percentage of Sangioveto - a local clone of Sangiovese - adds lift. The result is a broad, round, and versatile expression of the region and a calling card expression of the estate

A flavorful Pinot Noir with rich, smooth layers of dark fruit character and an intriguingly lighter-bodied style. Apothic Pinot Noir offers notes of ripe raspberry and black cherry, with a touch of caramel and vanilla from the oak. Long and lingering on the finish, this is a bright red wine with endless possibilities. It’s a perfect pairing for an interesting night in with friends or perhaps to savor alongside a date night dinner.

Viticulture Notes:
We selected the majority of the grapes for Apothic Pinot Noir from the unique Lodi-Delta region in California. With its cool evenings and warm days, Lodi is known as a producer of fragrant, concentrated, and silky textured fruit. California’s 2022 growing season was cool and mild, with a heat spell in August that resulted in an earlier than average harvest. Wines from this vintage showcase vibrant acidity and concentrated flavors.

Winemaking Notes:
We selected Pinot Noir grapes from Lodi for their rich, ripe fruit characteristics and soft, approachable tannins. Syrah complements the dark cherry flavors with soft blueberry notes. A hint of Grenache adds intensity to the fruit expression, while the unique Graciano variety was blended in to brighten the acidity and add notes of red currant. The grapes were destemmed, lightly crushed and cold soaked overnight to encourage extraction of the fruit’s intriguing color and structure

Mountain and benchland vineyards deliver a layered wine with structure, fruit intensity and finesse. Layers of vanilla and cassis are complemented by hints of cedar and a dusty finish on the palate.

The 2021 growing season marked a much-welcome return to ideal. Winter rains quenched the soil, setting the stage for dry weather the rest of the season. Over the summer, conditions stayed uneventful and mild, giving the grapes the luxury of hanging on the vine. Harvest began early, producing low yields of small berries with intense flavor concentration and optimal ripeness.

After early morning harvesting, the grapes were gently destemmed and put into upright tanks to cold soak for up to three days. To further extract flavor and varietal character, the wine was given pump-overs three times a day and kept on skins for 15 to 20 days of maceration time. The wine was then transferred to French (25% new) oak barrels for a period of 18 months.

Zinfandel holds a very special place in our hearts; it is one of California's signature grapes, easily associated with the state. Suited to the warm growing regions across the west coast, we focus on finding great vineyards that produce Zinfandel to our liking. There's a perfect window when picking Zin-pick it too early and you end up with a thin, "green" wine; pick it too late and you risk a stuck fermentation; pick it just right...well, that's our goal. Sourced from vineyards of pedigree, such as Stefani, Barrelli and Monte Rosso, the sixth iteration exudes the ethos of Eight Years in the Desert: a heart and body of Zinfandel with added nuance and complexity from Petite Sirah and Syrah-the quintessential California Red Wine.

WINEMAKER'S NOTES
At first glance, the 2022 Eight Years in the Desert looks to be almost black, but after closer inspection, a dark crimson starts to shine through with a tinge of purple on the rim. The nose is rife with notes of ripe blueberry, black plum, wild raspberry, espresso bean, sweet oak and a hint of crème de menthe and cedar. The entry is akin to walking through a tunnel of velvet walls with blackberry jam, reduced strawberry and a touch of rhubarb. Bright acidity throughout the palate, the wine closes with round, ripe tannins, fresh pluot and dark chocolate.

Our commitment to quality has enabled us to secure fruit from exceptional old vine blocks in revered sub-appellations.

Blend
Grenache, Syrah, and assorted Bordeaux varietals

Winemaker Notes
A dominant nose of red raspberries and wild strawberries, which leads into notes of cranberry, cherry, and rhubarb compote. The wine is fresh and lively with bright acidity, smooth texture, and chewy tannins.

Aging
Barrel aged 10 months prior to release

The mouthfeel is silky with delicate notes of raspberry and a touch of earthiness on the long finish.

We harvested the grapes for this wine at optimum ripeness, then used warm fermentation 88°-92°F to create intense flavor concentration, rich color and velvety tannins. Post fermentation, the wine was aged to add complexity and balance

A focus on geographic diversity has been a principle of ours or many years. Sourcing grapes from across California gives us the flexibility to produce wines when some regions are affected by forces outside of our control. But when the entire state experiences a great vintage, the diversity can sometimes be a problem…a good problem. Extensive tastings of trial blends are difficult when each blend is great for specific reasons. But in the end, we all agreed on the blend in front of you, comprised of fruit from across California — Sonoma Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands, Sta. Rita Hills and many more.

WINEMAKER’S NOTES
Crisp crimson in the glass, the 2021 Slander opens with notes of wild strawberry, pomegranate, Bing cherry and cedar. Secondary aromatics abound, with hints of redwood grove underbrush, white pepper and earth. Delicate on entry, the palate is flooding with red plum, cherry cola, rhubarb and spices. A touch of cocoa powder on the finish, the wine closes with confident acidity and length.
