About the Wine
The 2021 Clos du Bois Sauvignon Blanc is a bright wine that blossoms with aromas of lemongrass and honeysuckle. Pale straw in color, this wine delivers layers of Meyer lemon, kiwi and grapefruit with a lovely hint of white raspberry on the finish. A bright mouthfeel leads to a cleansing midpalate and a medium-long finish.

Viticulture Notes
We source the fruit for our delicious Sauvignon Blanc from select vineyards throughout California. The 2021 vintage began cool with much of the state experiencing dry conditions throughout the spring months. Summer brought the usual weather patterns that California vineyards thrive on: warm sunny days and cool fog-laden evenings, which allows the fruit to ripen slowly and evenly. The result is fully developed flavor characteristics, color and acidity.

Winemaking Notes
To retain the lively acidity and fruit characteristics of our Sauvignon Blanc, the grapes were harvested in the cool hours of the evening or early morning. After arrival at the winery, the fruit was gently pressed as whole clusters before being racked into stainless steel tanks to undergo fermentation. The yeast strain was chosen for its minimal impact on the flavors and aromas of the wine allowing the fruit to shine. The resulting wine is fresh, vibrant and delicious.

VITICULTURE NOTES
Grown in four exclusive vineyard sites across Marlborough, 55% from three sub-regions within the Wairau Valley (22% Renwick, 22% Spring Creek, 11% Lower Wairau) and 45% from two separate blocks of a single vineyard in Awatere Valley.

The 2022 growing season was cool and long, offering optimal conditions for ripening while preserving excellent acidity. A wet winter gave soils ample water resources for the season ahead. Spring arrived with ideal conditions, giving us wonderful fruit set and healthy yields. Summer was dry and lengthy, allowing fruit to hang on the vines while ripening slowly. Grapes were harvested later than usual, delivering fruit with flavor maturity and concentration while retaining pure fruit expression.

WINEMAKING NOTES
Windward Sauvignon Blanc is a blend of our five best lots of Sauvignon Blanc from the 2022 vintage. Both in the vineyards and in our cellar, these standout blocks stood out above the rest for their aromatic intensity, layered flavor development and incredible structure. Sauvignon Blanc grapes were harvested in cool conditions, then pressed immediately with minimal skin contact. After cold settling, the clear juice was fermented entirely in stainless steel tanks at very low temperatures with selected yeast strains to preserve inherent varietal characteristics and classic Marlborough flavors. These lots sat on light yeast lees in tank for up to six weeks prior to blending

The base of our blend is comprised of fruit from vineyards in the heart of the Wairau Valley, with its traditional passionfruit and crisp grassy flavors. This component is complemented by the second wave of plantings in the ever expanding Awatere Valley, which is noted for the minerality and elegant
characteristics the fruit gains from the region's proximity to the Pacific Ocean. For the balance of this wine, we have sought out fruit from the southern valley of Waihopai, where the gravel soils, and later, cooler ripening climate produce Sauvignon Blanc characteristics that provide the final layer of complexity and brings balance to our inaugural release of NZ. In the glass, a brilliant pale yellow reminiscent of white currants; the wine opens with an intense bouquet of gooseberries, feijoas, and ripe tropical fruits. The bright entry of fresh cut grass and preserved lemon lead to passionfruit pot de creme showcasing a long finish of fresh herbs and clean minerality.

Winemaking Notes
The grapes were harvested at night in cool temperatures to preserve their vibrant fruit characteristics, then destemmed and pressed immediately with minimal skin contact into stainless steel tanks. A long, slow fermentation was carried out over three weeks at cool temperatures using various yeast strains to lend complexity, enhance fruit expression and maintain the classic Marlborough character. This Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from vineyards in the Central Coast, where consistently warm sunny days are followed by cool breezes from the Pacific Ocean at night. While below average winter rainfall led to some light early spring irrigation, the 2022 growing season continued with favorable warm weather that aided canopy growth and even berry set. Steady temperatures ensured fruit was maturing slowly allowing for gradual ripening and extended hang times. A small heat spike in late September slightly sped up the harvest but fruit still came in with beautiful acidity.

Harvested from certified sustainable vineyards, the fruit was hand-picked in the early morning, brought to the winery and destemmed. The wine was cold fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve the beautiful natural acidity of the grapes.

In times of crisis, we quickly learn to appreciate the things we take for granted. Farmworkers are the bedrock of many communities, and without them, many products we use on a daily basis wouldn’t exist. The same is true for the wine industry; without a hard-working immigrant work force, grapes wouldn’t be picked, and communities wouldn’t have the same vibrancy and diversity that exists today. Knowing they need support, now more than ever, our brand and cause, Veladora, is focused on just that. The wine represents our commitment to Puertas Abiertas (Open Doors), through an annual donation. The Sauvignon Blanc is sourced entirely from the Solari Vineyard in Calistoga and the McGah Vineyard in Rutherford.
Tasting Notes:
A vibrant gold in the glass, the wine opens with aromatics of lemon meringue pie, white peach, jasmine, fresh lilies and intriguing musk. Flooding and enveloping on entry, the opulent nose gives way to a juxtaposed entry and mid-palate of green apple and key lime. Rich and round on the finish, the wine closes with notes of lemon custard, lemon pith and lengthy acidity.
